Ha! I just came here to ask that same question. Well, it might be slightly different:

All I have with me is my Mac.

I need to rip video from a DVD.
I need to edit that video (cut 2-5 minute segments for upload).
I need to upload the result to YouTube or somesuch to embed in a website.

I've been looking around, and it looks like there are many free rippers and converters, and like there is an ongoing race to improve the quality/compression/speed of conversions. Rather than review the last couple years' worth of documentation and reviews, I'm hoping someone can recommend a solution.

So, what's a good ripper/converter program or pair of programs for Mac?

Lest anyone be worried, I have permission to do this from the media's owner.
