More Laptop questions~

Postby Myth » Sat Dec 06, 2008 8:25 am

Apparently I am once more in the market for a new laptop, now that my thousands and thousands of dollars in hospital bills are paid off.

How is Acer as a brand? I know people sing about Lenovo, but I'm really after as much memory as I can get, and I've yet to find a Lenovo with 4G. (That said, I'm not done browsing.) Acer has a laptop that I'm thinking looks really good, but I don't know much about them as a manufacturer.

It's early and I can't spell.

Edit: I've also found a Toshiba I like, and I had a Toshiba laptop in the past that did all right. (I was less computer saavy back in high school and admit to fucking it up pretty hardcore, so I don't know what it would have been like if I was competant.)

Toshiba laptops are still awesome and great all-round.

I have a Qosmio F55 and it works great. Acceptable battery life (couple of hours depending on usage), runs games great and haven't had problems. Native resolution on this laptop is 1440x900.

The only difference is I took out the stock HDD and RAM and put in faster ones.

When it comes to preinstalled shitware overload, the Acer desktops I get at work are the worst offenders.

Haven't bought an Acer, so I have nothing to add there, so I'll just echo Setsuna: need to know what the laptop will primarily be used for to give meaningful recommendations.

Power-wise perhaps not, but even if all I did on my laptop was limited to Internet, Email, and light classwork (like writing papers) I would not want to work on that small a screen/resolution. And I would want things like 802.11n and bluetooth. But by the same token those tasks don't require all of the added muscle of a macbook pro. So there is definitely an "in between" category unrelated to things like processor/hdd/memory specs.

I have a budget.

Also, the input I've gotten about Acer has been 50/50, as has the feedback about Asus. =/

Preinstalled shitware can be dealt with. How is it as a -machine-?

Unfortunately I know little about laptops. Something that usually works is googling the model you want to buy and see what kind of problems people have with them

There's a huge in between but I'm just saying for me specifically. It's all or nothing. In which case since the Pro cost too much it would be nothing.

Macbook Pros are overpriced unless you plan on being a photojournalist. And only a photojournalist.

You're payin' for the pretty.

I love my new laptop's looks, and rationally I know they couldn't have stuffed my graphics card in a smaller case and maintained the thermal budget, but that doesn't stop me from being jealous of those new macbook pros I see around campus.
