Shadow Strike?

Postby Cassiel » Wed Sep 01, 2010 2:59 am

He's not afraid of his own shadow, but everyone else is.

This is one thing SC2 can do that WC3 couldn't, even though it's based on a bug. I don't know what it'll ultimately be used for though.

Out of curiosity, how did you do that? The only problem with using this in a map would be that it wouldn't be visible to anyone playing on low settings or otherwise without shadows enabled.

It's not an ability yet fool. I'm just demonstrating what I can do with the shadow.

Magic! I won't reveal my tricks until after we release something.

Indeed, and from what I've seen such people do exist. The shadow wouldn't be the entire visual though.

Be honest now. Can you even play on the lowest settings? That's where I was when WC3 came out. My video card was so old that I could only see parts of models.

I am unable to play even on the lowest levels. I can run the editor but barely.

erwt does. I don't. SC2 only raises my GPU's temperature about 2 degrees.

Cass your PC is like the black knight; every new game only inflicts a series of flesh wounds but it still keeps kicking ass. Till it's head gets chopped off.

My computer cant run it too well, which kinda suck. been too lazy to buy a new one. I need my computer-guy-friend back to the town to help me.

Is this shadow thingy something similiar to catching shadow in wc3? You somehow manage to acces that shadow actor that is created for unit for those guys with shadow settings on or something?

I'm sure you could grab and manipulate shadows in cool ways with a more versatile engine. Just, you know, not with SC2.

nice idea.
the engine however seems to be quite bad, specs are really high for the graphics you get.

engine isn't bad. When you consider that you can have dozens of units on screen and each of them is between 1k - 20k polygons it's pretty impressive. I dunno how they are handling LODs but if they really are drawing that many polys at once it's no surprise that the specs are the way they are.

Well, I guess technically there's a shadow actor--you just can't do anything with it. Actor functions and messages have no effect on it. Even destroying it does nothing.

Zomg, why doesn't everyone else love the shadow dude as much as I do? It's the coolest take on a non-controllable pet I've seen... maybe... ever. Omnom.

All that, and then a rinky dinky monitor. So sad.

Actually my monitor died on me shortly after, so I ended up getting a new one anyway! Bless Yale's heart.

Oh. Well then. Carry on.

I finally stuck in my i7/P6X58D/DDR3 Dominator RAM so my rig's looking pretty alright, now. Just need to upgrade this 8800 GTS 512, QQ.
