A single line on your resume can mean the difference between a job and being unemployed.

Although I'm not sure you care about something like employment opportunities in the video game industry from what I can tell.

Also, don't they go to another job where they DO have ownership? I mean Guinsoo went on to form Riot Games and he pretty much owns League of Legends.

Last week we tried playing on Tuesday as well but Travis flaked and Marius can't make it. So I watched the Fantastic Mr. Fox with Chris instead (luckily it just came in the mail). Actually a very awesome movie.

I just got a game of BSG together with my dad, my friend, and his parents... Cylons won (I was a human) but it pretty much came down to the last 2 or 3 cards.

Last night we played Dominion: Intrigue and Galaxy Trucker and I'm hoping on getting a game of Space Alert in before the end of this week.

Board games rule! By the way, what is your BGG profile?

I just played a game of Citadels and BSG yesterday. Citadels was fine but the BSG sucked. Both were played with 4 players.

It's amazing how crappy BSG is with 4 yet how awesome it is with 5. We played the default 4p rules (with sympathizer) and the humans were doing well int he beginning so they automatically lost at the end - wasn't even close.

I think my BGG is mrw0nka. I rarely actually login on there - just read stuff.

I'd rather be unemployed and homeless than create a million-dollar franchise that I have no rights to.

Stexe wrote:Although I'm not sure you care about something like employment opportunities in the video game industry from what I can tell.

There are plenty of jobs I'd do for Blizzard, but nothing creative unless we shared ownership. Marketing, technical writing, even level design, sure. But I wouldn't create new intellectual property (characters, stories, worlds) for a salary, not for Blizzard.

Stexe wrote:Also, don't they go to another job where they DO have ownership? I mean Guinsoo went on to form Riot Games and he pretty much owns League of Legends.

Guinsoo didn't form Riot and he doesn't own League of Legends. He's an associate designer doing work for hire, and thrilled about it I'm sure. If I were in his position though I'd probably want to share ownership of any champions I created, minus their LoL-specific content. That basically means general hero concepts, ability sets and names, since the way I do these things is pretty distinctive. As the creator of DotA I'm sure he could've leveraged this, but admittedly most people don't care about it the way I do.

That is unlikely to happen in the game industry, ever, anywhere. We are slaves to the man, man.

I know. The game industry is exploitative, but everyone puts up with it because "omg we get to make gamez for our job!!1!" I'd love to see a developer co-op along the lines of Image Comics, and maybe as digital distribution grows we will. Right now services like Steam are finicky, though, even if you're willing to agree to their terms.

That said, work for hire is by no means unique to the game industry, and we're actually in the midst of a general rights and quality of life improvement for the people working there, thanks in large part to Erin Hoffman. Outside of QA, most developers range from decent to amazing in terms of work schedules now, and there are even studios that implement shared ownership for their employees.

It's Blizzard's contest and Battle.net terms that are truly unforgivable. Modders are the ones who kept WC3 alive past 2004. Blizzard should be supporting them, not claiming ownership of their work.

They should certainly treat the content people better when it comes to rights but you also have to look at the flip side.

Someone comes up with crap and the company loses several million dollars. The company definitely has more at stake.

Some kind of joint ownership is a must though. It just needs to be limited enough to where you can't just hop over and give it to a competitor.

?

That reminds me of something though. I was thinking of AoB being more arena style and I really like this song for like a promo video battle thing:

God I love that song. Even at high quality on youtube it doesn't do it justice.

Great lines for a promo:

Every living thing
Pushed into the ring
Fight it out to wow the crowd

Chorus:
Oh, oh, oh if I could only see the clear blue sky from my office window,
Oh, oh then it would only take a steel grey day and I'd take my bow.

And I'd like to thank all my friends and fans for always pushing me to soldier on.
So one last time for the cameras

A lifetime of selling my body to pay the bills.
But my heart and my mind are mine
Mine, you will not win this war--
This is just a battle.

Chorus:
Oh, oh, oh well I've surrendered you
My physical attendance here
But no, no, no you will not take my soul
Lest we forget why I'm sitting here.

Also, Unwritten Law makes a better theme song.

Heh, I haven't heard that song in a long time! Good stuff. I'll call it a tie for best theme song. I'm too much of a Metric kick.

There's no tides in space.

Change it to "Spacetides of Starcraft".

I'm pretty sure ToB died after SC2 was released, and that's a fucking shame considering I had a whole lot more fun playing O than SC2.

It probably hasn't helped that I took my bot offline at the end of June, because I was moving. Then development for ToB seemed to have stagnated, or changed platforms, so I never bothered to bring it back online. My new internet connection is about one-sixth the speed, but at least I get unlimited downloading. ISP's in Quebec are garbage.

Interest was always pretty tepid, but if enough people want to play, then I'll bring it back.

My location is set to YUL, the International Air Transport Association airport code for the Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport. Bit obscure, I guess. :)

I was with Videotron for a few years. They're alright, but the download limit has cost me some hefty overcharges. I switched to Teksavvy, and it's been great so far. They offer a 5mbps, unlimited bandwidth, dsl connection for 39.95/month, and no contract either. It saddens me that they're pretty much the only ISP offering unlimited data transfer in QC.

Why am I not surprised? There hasn't ever been anything worthwhile in Quebec.
