He solicited donations without asking us, then ran away with the money. It was very uncool.

Who is getting the money exactly?

If I donated enough would y'all unlock TOB so that anyone could look at / change the map?

Contact Cassiel directly regarding the map source.

I think it explains somewhere the money's split basically 50/50 with me and Cass. The me part is just to account for hosting (which I assure you will forever be in the red but I don't really mind too much).

My country (Serbia) still hasn't allowed palpal in. Negotiations and documentations are being "worked on" for a while now.

At this point any money will go toward hosting costs. Since we're done modding, windigo and I are toying with the idea of revamping the site to be more content-oriented. Even if that never happens, though, he's been paying to keep this place going for years now, and realistically, donations are never going to compensate him for that.

It's highly unlikely that I would ever give the map to someone else to develop. I could see potentially releasing systems and tools like the Item Socketer, but nothing on the creative end.

Realistically how much would it "cost" to work on exporting ToB to a standalone client? Battle net has gone so far down hill even the best maps get completely ignored by the empty-game bot spammers. I'm still a broke recently-graduated college student but I would gladly help donate to fund a stand-alone project.

Well, better look at what you would not have to pay for. Which is basically the creative work. Now substract stuff that cant be used outside of wc3 e.g. skins and all the things wc3 shipped with.
That leaves you with … not much.

A singleplayer standalone AoS game itself is relatively easy to program from scratch, but working out multiplayer, efficient net code, servers, replays, and tool support for the creative side of the devs takes an absolute assload of work. Work that you really do need a team for.

A singleplayer AoS. I can barely contain my excitement. :P

I can't say anything about that, because I never worked on anything game or even 3d related. So gathering a few guys who know how to program and calling it a team isn't gonna cut it. Without at least someone who actually knows how things should work such a project would just fail, regardless of enthusiasm and commitment.

That is exactly what happened with LoL though. Their initial amateurism was absolutely mind-baffling, it's a miracle they got this far.

True.
Also what initial amateurism? They still don't have replays and a working observer mode, do they?
Regardless, I don't think they started from zero. At least I can't believe they did.
