I'd go as far to say that mine are taking on an indigo...oops, I forgot that color doesn't exist anymore, a violet hue.

Dear Cass,

I never liked ToB, I played the original back when it was popular but it never stuck with me. (I don't particularly like AOS, DotA I don't like either).

Then one day came where I was on the hive or wc3, or some thing or other, and I saw your object data script that allowed you to change stats and things that previously I thought were impossible. I thought it was amazing, so I clicked on your profile and later found out that you were the maker of ToB. Oh, interesting, I thought. So I come to this site and I snoop around and see all these videos of amazing things you've done. It literally blew me out of the water, it's stuff I've never seen before. That ability that slows time was so shocking. That's when I started stalking these forums, searching for all of your posts. I wanted to discover more about you, on a personal level and on the whole warcraft, coder level.

I was always quite about it until now. I am so friggin' amazed, that I can't help but speel. I'm quite a good map maker myself (based on HiveWorkshop standards), but the stuff you do... God it just blows me a way. You truly are an inspiration to me. All the posts you make have this wit and intelligence on a whole other level. That's why I always like reading your posts, even if they have to do with something else entirely.
I really like the posts you made on the SC2 map-money making scheme, it really helped me realize what it takes to be a game designer. I've always wanted to be a game designer as a kid (I'm 18 now), but now that I'm going off to uni next year, I want to do something that gets a little more money, so I'm taking Mathematics at one of the best Math-unis in Canada. I still would like to design games in my spare time.

My biggest problem when it comes to game designing is that I rarely finish a project. I startup being so motivated and full of ideas, but eventually I just get bored of it and start another project that I never complete. Which is another reason you are inspiring to me, because even though you have bene on tihs project for years, you keep on trucking.

Anyway back to this video. This is amazing because I had this idea a while back, and had it in my map. Mine worked just like yours, except only 3 sockets. I eventually gave up on it because I got tired of creating item template after item template in the object editor because it was boring and time-consuming work.

I know this is a lot, but it's like years of silence for me, so I figured I'd have to do it all now, AND because I wanted to give some background on who I am (i have 0 posts, I realize that) before I asked some questions.

Anyway here are those questions that I wanted to ask.

1) How does your C++ program work. Does it edit the map file itself?
2) What happens if I put the sockets in the item, in a different order. (For example, a blue socket before a red one, would the tooltip look like this?

Empty
BLUE SOCKET
Empty
Empty.

3) How old are you? Do you have a job? How many hours a day (or week) do you spend working on ToB?

Well that's it. Hopefully you'll get around to answering these. I'll continue following your posts.

That's probably a good idea. I wish I'd done something in math/physics/EECS. Richard Garfield is a mathematician, after all.

This is the most common problem people who want to work on games have. Unfortunately execution--not design--is what will make you marketable. There's a great article in The Escapist that delves into this: Why Your Game Idea Sucks.

overload119 wrote:1) How does your C++ program work. Does it edit the map file itself?

Yes. I used Shadowflare's MPQ API, which also comes with a VB module (that's what The Widgetizer uses).

Empty.

The socket contents have a fixed order. If 0 is empty, 1 is red and 2 is blue, inserting blue would give you 2-0-0-0. If you then inserted red, it would become 1-2-0-0. You only see 4 gemtypes in the video, but there are 10.

29, no job since I left graduate school in June, and the time varies heavily. I was spending a lot of time on it when I was in school and should have been doing other things, but now not so much.

Edit: This is the part where I message him on AIM and hope he's not busy boffing his hot but prudish girlfriend.

Edit: I am very hungry.

Edit the Third: I don't think he's jailbait anymore, anyway.

Jesus Christ I was a preteen when I joined these boards.
I know the pieces fit, 'cause I watched them tumble down.
No fault, none to blame; it doesn't mean I don't desire
To point the finger, blame the other, watch the temple topple over
To bring the pieces back together, rediscover communication.
