Back in 2007 when I was 17 I joined the National Guard to pay for college and the $20,000 bonus. Well this semester I went to college and dropped out. I have always made good grades but I never studied and didn't really start in college. And I chose Biology as my major because I knew it would lead to a good job, but I'm not interested in Biology and biology is really hard to study if your not interested in it. I am going to go Active duty but I can't right now because I have to wait 6 months the Georgia National Guard is deploying and my commander wouldn't let me until at least halfway through the deployment. I don't have to go, my unit is already full on deploying and I could get a job at some fast food place or go back to college for a semester (I have college first in my contract) until then. But I don't want to do that and I'll come back with at least 20,000 since overseas pay is tax free and you can't really spend your paycheck in Afghanistan. I'm in the process of volunteering and don't know how long it will be until I leave.
My MOS is chemical operations ( the reason for my bonus) and I feel pretty confident in it because from what I hear its easy. Mostly I just make sure the company I am in knows how to put their MOPP on quickly (which is part of deployment training) and manage the chemical gear, which in a National Guard unit isn't going to be very fancy. And I kept all the manuals from AIT unlike some of the other guys/girls who threw them away. But I doubt I'll be doing that, I'll probably be doing the same thing as all the cooks, truck drivers, and Air defense artillery guys, which is guard convoys, FOBS, etc. When I go active duty I'm thinking about being a translator, electrician, lab tech, or computer repair. When I get back if I remeber I'll let you guys know how it went.
