So Amazon is offering their own game engine now, called Lumberyard. lol and lol.

Freaking Amazon, man, wtf...

But it's a variation of the CryEngine, with built-in support for Amazon's cloud computing and advanced Twitch integration. oh.

It's free to use, but there's some catch when you're using the cloud functions or what. hrrm.

It offers scripting by flow graph, and scripting by Lua, and full source of engine in C++. ah.

But CryEngine always had problems with Blender support, and from the looks of it that's still a problem. It's made for Maya or Max. I heard it's altogether a bit harder than Unreal or Unity. is it worth it? I don't know.

An interesting new player coming to the scene. what.the.hell.freakin.amazon.man...

Yeah... it's kinda like I imagined our gobo rpg would be like.

The trailers looked fun, but I was wary if they'd already shown the best as they usually do. Oh boy did it exceed my expectations though. Not only was there ever so much more fun stuff, but the way it was contextualized in the other tones of the rest, really made it work a lot better than you'd expect from just random teen trash humour flicks. It got a good dose of everything and nailed the timings.

From what I heard, it's doing so well, the studio bosses are already planning more "R" rated super hero flicks. Like, they're prolly going a lot more risky on the next Wolverine, too. We'll see how that works out, I mean "R" can be fun, but it's no quality by itself, it's what you make of it. It happened to work pretty much perfect for Deadpool.

Anyway, first time since forever I went to cinema, and oh my gosh was it a worthy entry.

I got to see it on the same day I was turning myself into a guinea pig for VR experiments. Some company was looking for test subjects. Never tried it before, so was pretty curious. It was based on the HTC Vive. Well... was some fucking crazy shit, yo. It was this little room, that had two sensors placed in corners to detect your position. Put helm on and walk around, look around, naturally. If you're getting too close to a real wall, it shows a warning in your view. Shit's become kinda affordable, but still expensive. Adding up costs of the VR plus a powerful machine to run it, makes it still an enthusiast toy. But man, it did run pretty damn well. This company uses it as service for other companies trying to advertise their products to customers in shops and conventions. So instead of having all the real things on display, all those wash machines, fridges, kitchen sinks, furniture whatever, people can look the virtual versions. It had two control modes, one was with sticks in your hands, used like laser pointers in the virtual world, to mark, highlight and activate stuff. The other was actually just using your real naked hands, translated by the outward cams of headset into virtual hands. that shit was especially rad. After that we all went watching Deadpool. was a good freakin day. All I could think of was that Blackbox with VR could be really nuts. And porn. Yeah, I was mostly thinking about porn. Okay, I was only thinking about porn. But some days later I was also thinking about Blackbox. a little. only to get distracted by porn.

Aaaaanyway. What's-my-name Francis, the boogie, sums it up quite well.

Hrrm, so I've stumbled on some probs in development for Windows. Currently I'm stuck on Ubuntu and develop for Windows via Wine. I once thought that's okay, because I wanted to ensure good run on that anyway, and figured that most problems for Linux come from special coding in Windows. I hoped, or expected, to have less problems, doing it the other way around. However, to my surprise, I have to realize that standard Wine has less problems than Windows itself. The various Windows versions occasionally have a very weird behaviour. I can only test an actual Windows system once a month maybe, for a short time, on a random version of it, so I never really know what's going on.

The one thing currently bugging me the most is the key events. The two most annoying issues are:

1:
It turns out the Line tool doesn't actually work for regular Windows users? The Line tool is activated via holding the Ctrl key. But while that works fine in Wine, in Windows it auto-deactivates after about 2 seconds. It seems, for some mysterious reason, Windows sends a "key released" event to the app after that short time, even though you are still holding down Ctrl.

2:
As mentioned in updates, Marking several colours in palette at once had problems in the past, and apparently for Win10 still doesn't work? On the Win7 I got to test on, block marking with Ctrl + Enter works fine. I don't even know if it works on Win8. For Win 10 at least, the last update introduced alternative keys, but even that still doesn't seem to work for it with Ctrl in my latest test.

What's even more confusing, for everything else using/holding Ctrl seemed to work fine?

So both problems are tied to the Ctrl key not being properly handled by the default event system of actual Windows in some cases.

A work-around may be manually polling the Ctrl key, and some other keys.

But I'm disappointed and frustrated. Things like these should not be a problem, and aren't on other systems. I can never be quite sure what to expect or when to find out. You never know what weird crap it does next, against all common sense.

Is a pity the Line tool apparently didn't really work for so many people. Not only is it useful, but so much stupid fun in 3d. Making spider webs in corners, and the like. It's so strange how much fun even mundane things become in 3d. Just wildly scribbling in MSPaint is okay, but gets kinda old fast. Do the same thing in Blackbox, just blasting around shit and fly through the debris, it's still fun for me after years...

So they just revealed the price tag of the HTC Vive: 799$

that's like 200 more than Oculus. But that's "alright". The ability of the Vive to track you standing up and walking around your room naturally, is so worth it. It really is that last step that makes the experience complete and a winner. After trying the Vive, I wouldn't want the Oculus anymore. just lookin around ain't enough no more. wouldn't skimp out about that money, considering the overall system investment anyway.

I'm actually surprised the Vive is sub 1000$. Almost tempts me to say "good deal". Didn't quite expect to get this kinda experience that soon at any sort of consumer price range.

The problem being, at any case, I have no idea how to afford either. But damn, I do wish I could. And to imagine how this shit could become cheap mass market within the next ten years, is totally fucking crazy. it really is. amazing.

But whether or not that catches on for private homes, the least I expect is that all kinds of small shops / convention centres / meeting halls will crop up, with entry fee, where people meet to play with it together. Equivalent to going cinema, but more of a revival to Arcade centres. Especially for small shop owners, the price and handling is good enough to be worth it even for them. That it's just outside the reach for most normal people, will for the next couple years make for an interesting attraction. Whatever the VR price for the gadget, who got the space at home to do all the crazier stuff anyway: Run around with friends and slay dragons the size of a building! Could be the new Dungeon Raid events you know from MMOs. Hrrrrmm. that kinda business could be a big run for a while. hehe. kinda tempted to try set up shop myself. meeh. busy.

How silly that looks when their mages throw little symbolic bags at you and yell "Lightning Bolt!". Well, guess what, shit gets "real" now. Those people are gonna bring it to the next level. holy molly.

That VR shit really works now. Like they say, you gotta try it to get it. You put that helm on and it's like you're some place else. The lady that was operating my session, at some point she did some re-adjustments. The view was shaking and jittering a little, and because the experience is so convincing, even though I was warned and prepared it threw me off so hard I almost lost balance from a save stance to fall flat on my nose. Just like they show in those silly videos on youtube.

Just remembered.. wasn't there some stupid hype around some crappy MMO some years back called "Second Life". It was some social hub kinda thing. It had controversy because socializing also included having sex. Your dumb low poly avatars pleasuring each other. The nerve! Well this "Second Life" thing sure has another light on it with VR now.

And when you think back how silly the controversy of the past appears today in light of much worse.. like can you even imagine today why people were concerned about the original Wolfenstein, considering what kids play today? And the "dangers" of VR now, from one moment to the other, jumps orders of magnitude, to make all earlier controversy ever a fucking joke.

But who gives a shit! Bring it!

Lots of fat people jokes. but who knows, people may be motivated to get fitter with it.
Aren't there some good cinderella stories for Wii sports or something?
Don't they say you burn all those calories in a good fuck?

Guh. okay. had another short opportunity to test Windows. The situation is this:

As mentioned before, when pressing and holding the key Ctrl, after about one second, Windows sends a key released event even though you're still holding.

Now the curious thing is, if you keep holding anyway, and now press another key in combination, Windows resends the Ctrl key down event and then the new key down event. And this time, whatever else you do, it doesn't send the Ctrl key released event on its own until you actually release Ctrl. What the freakin fuck, right. Who comes up with that?

Until I put up another update dealing with that, the current work around for the user is this:

Hold Ctrl, and just shortly tap Shift above. The Line tool stays active until you release Ctrl.

Happy Lining. >.>

I saw the Atari documentary from Netflix. fun stuff.

And going with that, I just stumbled upon "The man who made the 'worst video game in history'".

I respect the guy's work and ability more than pretty much anything from the retro scene today. But then again, technically speaking, you needed a lot more skill to make the original Pong than an entire ego shooter on UE4 these days.

They threw some legendary parties there as well, the companies competing for the best talents to hire. They had it all, drugs, chicks and rock'n roll. Those were the days, man, crazy, crazy days for nerds. *sigh* and what do I get today? huh? a bad conscience. fuck you.
