Finally Employed!

Postby o » Sun Jun 26, 2011 4:26 pm

Well it's been about 2 months since I graduated and I just signed my contract to work as an Associate 3d Artist at Blizzard. I start in like 2 weeks.

Way back when I was playing TOB M and saw all the custom textures I got inspired to learn how to do it myself. Like 5..6? years later and it's finally paid off. So thanks tob for inspiring me in the right direction.

It's like we are this sect whose members go into the world and slowly infiltrate institutions of power.

ToB M, like Mecca. Talk about total conversion. Modding game, modding people.

Cool story bro, glad you're doing something you're stoked about.

I feel like getting drunk and telling you guys I love you.

That's incredible, o.

For most people it's nearly impossible to find a job, period. You landed probably your #1 pick. Make sure to take the time to really soak it up. Congrats!

Thanks guys.

It'll be interesting to see what things are like on the other side.

On another note, I was thinking back to when I first started coming to this forum and remembered how big it once was. It's crazy to think the community now consists of like 9 people. This place used to be busy!

I never hear about big rounds of layoffs at Blizzard. That alone makes them a bit of a Mecca in the game industry.

And if they say they haven't, you must put a frown on your face and go off shaking your head, mumbling "what a bunch of backwater hillbillies."

When I went up there for an interview and they asked me how I got into game art I basically said the same thing I said here. Talked about Tides of Blood and how I wanted to learn how to texture to get into the game art community. How I learned the war3 editor and whatnot.

One of the environment artists like shrieked with happiness when she heard the name TOB and said she loved the game. The lead env artist had me tell the story to like everyone I met there.

Oh wow, that is amazing, alright. It's almost like some sworn Freemasonry fraternity, where you hint through some mystical signet you're part of it, and the other is suddenly like "Oh, you don't need to say anything more. I understand. Brothers and sisters! Welcome our soulmate and bloodkin in this circle of power. Show him the secret passage ways and entrust him the treasure chests."

And knowing there is latent ToB fandom within Blizzard makes it even more a shame AoB didn't take off on SC2. As if it wasn't already maddening enough looking at the stuff that's been made there back then and just feeling this overwhelming "omfg I soooooo wanna play that right naow!". Time? Limited and locked support, tools, platform? yadda, yadda, what gives, wanna play. Huh? What you say? I couldn't anyway? I can't hear you over the sound of how much I want to play. Please no arguments, arguments are so five years ago. And when I say five I mean whatever.

Someone is currently in there doing your job, and he won't just step down and watch you do it. He may however mysteriously disappear, like mur.. magic. But we planned for that, right, we saw it coming years ago and prepared, everything is coming together now. It's time to awaken the sleeper; o, look at the light, follow it.. yes, remember your mission.. remember o, remember, remember...

I'm not even there yet and obviously have no influence whatsoever but if I were to hear of any positions that would interest you I could probably let you know before it's posted and maybe get you a more direct line to the important people.

But again I have no idea, I'll just be a lowly artist but I'll keep my ears open.

Hell with me, erwt's the one who should be running the asylum. I'm just butthurt that Blizzard can't wrap their collective heads around modding.
