Blizzard Dota? Blizzard Dota.

S'Yeah.

More amusingly though, here's what some John Funk (no really) on the escapist had to say:
(I'm the one doing the bolding)

John Funk wrote:
It definitely works smoothly, and though it's clearly a work in progress - there were no "neutral" creeps around on which players could grind experience, for one - it feels like DotA ought to. The balance seems a bit off at the moment, with certain abilities feeling exceedingly overpowered (one of my base skills could kill almost an entire wave of creeps) and the defensive structures coming across as rather weak. While there are several item shops in the game, it's lacking the cool bit of DotA where you could combine and upgrade items which made it feel like you were building your character with a defined goal in sight.

Is it me or does this actually sound...pretty fucking sweet?

I've been trying to think of something positive to say about this but it's really hard. It's nice that it's not like DotA, but on that note it's also nice that it won't try to kick me in the shins.

Funk also thinks the SC2 Editor is the most powerful modding tool ever created.

Indeed he is. By the way, what they're doing is exactly what I was talking about here, right down to the Smash Bros. analogy. Assuming they'll also be adding Diablo heroes, that is. The level design sucks (Chess? Dice? Really?) and the heroes will probably be uninspired, but they got the general idea right.

He looks and behaves like the average Dutch CS/IT student. Except he talks more.

Is that hilarious hairstyle staple for nerds internationally?

So they're using a different tool then what they shipped the game with?

Quite creative with the name...
So many possibilities, so much unexplored areas...

And to hell with recipes, socketing is the way to go. I'm still trying to make ToB's item system so that I could implement it into my probably-never-gonna-be-released hero arena.

Nothing wrong with repices if they are kinda logical, like some Jungle Troll Tribes style: stick + rope + dagger makes a spear.

The problem with repices in most of AoSes is that newcomers have to waste too much time trying to find correct item combinations for the lategame item they want when there is no fast way to find out what you need and where you can buy it from. It can so easily to become too complex.

And yea, socketting is cool and simple.

But having few repices here and there might not hurt, no? Just few repices, right guys? guys...?
No Marlo, no game.

I like item sets, like gloves+helm+boots+armor+sword gives some battle suit. That's cool. The thing is that it occupies too much inventory space. That's why I find socketing better.
If they found another way to introduce recipes I'd think twice.

Something a lil different would be to just give all heroes their own specific starting equipment - weapon(s), armor, etc and allow the player to upgrade them based on what they want to do via gems or a forge. Maybe Sylvanus' weapon is a bow and when she upgrades it - now she's firing black arrows instead or simply making the item +1, +2, and so on.

Players could still purchase other items like accessories or utility items with limited uses.

This would be easy to balance too.

Looks pretty fun to me. Silly, yeah, but isn't that kind of the point?
