Yeah.

I finished my rogue playthrough a little while ago and that'll be enough until a few DLC are out I guess.

Has anyone been playing The Witcher 2? From what I've read it makes Bioware look pretty bad. Opinions?

I never managed to play through the first one due to horrible bugs including one where a NPC died through a quest, but was needed to complete three other quests after, which I could now not do. As a result I don't care at all about this series and wonder how it even got a sequel.

Was that with the enhanced edition / director's cut patches applied? Supposedly, not only did it fix all those bugs, but also generally improve stuff to make it shine. The second part doesn't seem to suffer this though, the reviews are pretty glowing so far, maybe you miss out.

This was when it first came out. I was pretty angry cause I had spent a good amount of time by that point and I stopped paying attention to it altogether, so I did not realize they fixed those issues. Maybe I should revisit it...

I'm curious if Witcher 2 is really as good as it's made out to be. I also wonder if my system can handle it reasonably.

I hear it's hard even on normal. People are dying left and right in the prologue. Sounds less like an Introduction and more like a Rite of Passage. As it should be.

Hrrm, there seems to be an imbalance of difficulty; it starts out harder than it ends. And maybe the story does not wrap up as well as it spun out. Still, I gather the consensus on the net to be that Witcher 2 is what DA2 should have been.

That irritates me, because I think DA2 is exactly what it should have been. Can't the Witcher 2 be good on its own damn merits?

Can anything be good on its own merits? Anything is qualified by everything else. You must know everything to best qualify anything.

However, see what such discussion is not about. Witcher 2 does not tell you: "You must not have ever dared to enjoy DA2, even if you were dumb enough to play it. How could you have enjoyed DA2?! Dumb motherfucker, reconsider immediately your retrospection!! Look at my lips: now that you know me, you know you hated every moment of DA2 back then. Your experience is forfeited! Until learning of me, you, son, have wasted your life!".

Fair point. Sorry. I loved DA2 and I get defensive. Forget I was here. I'm a ghost. Booooooo.

Then I will become a medium and convene with the otherworld, since only death can please life.

This can boil down to one line: experience is not invalidated, expectation is.

I wish Witcher 2 the sales it deserves. I hope that having serious competition for once in a long time will spur Bioware on to better heights. I think it is fair to say that, for all they do still well, there seems to be a sort of slack creeping into them. Can be lonely on top, I guess. Maybe they'll take some hints and inspiration.

Being disappointed with DA2, yes, I feel Witcher delivers an experience more to my liking. It is by no means a perfect game, but it's pretty fucking good. Better than the 1st, which was not the case with DA. So my expectations heading into it were not as high as for DA2 coming from DAO, but that being said, it also didn't disappoint me in any particularly regard.

Definitely worth the buy. First one is too. I think it's like, 10 bucks now? Which is a fucking steal.

I played the first one for a bit but then forgot all of the combat timing so I can't go back and play it anymore. I just die to anything. I put it on hard so there's no indicators really of when to click :(

Yeah, Witcher 2 seems to surprise expectation as well as raise expectation. It does not take away past experience, but it does shape future experience, and that includes attempts of re-experience. Those things people may have tolerated before in favor of other strengths, should now be a lot harder for them to balance against, also relevant to DLCs.

It looks like I'll finally try this game. Dragon AgeOrigins + expansion and content packs is on sale on Steam for $7.49.

Without spoilers, is there anything I should know before I jump into it? For example, if this were Baldur's Gate 2, I might want to know:
  • Pretty much anyone with any thief levels is good enough to handle traps/locks/doors throughout the game.
  • A secondary mage is great.
  • More than 2 mages is too squishy.
  • In case you want an alignment theme, there aren't enough Evil tanks, and the only Good cleric is obnoxious.
  • <insert weapon type> is underrepresented in the named equipment list.

Also, hi, how is everyone?

It would seem Bioware did feel some pressure from fan feedback on DA2 and the advances by Witcher. Got them back to shape and ambition. But is it better than the first DA:O? and Witcher3?

Anyways, since DA:I, unlike DA2, seems to not have too obvious shortcomings sprinkled into the good, I'm more likely to agree with Mengde's objection now that it could stand by its own merits.

Well, it's funny, you see, obviously I'm just meta-talking somehow around the topic... to see some kind of talk on the topic. was really cool back in the day to read all that substantial yay or nay on actual gameplay, instead of some guessgame about it. :)

I've got such a huge back log, I'll almost certainly wait for a Steam Origin sale this time around.
