But the composition is mediocre and the arrangement is obviously pure faddish crap. This description fits a lot of recent pop songs, actually. I miss using this shit/teaching covers in my classes =\. Sometimes the original has the kernel of something great in it and is just waiting for the right person to come along and turn that kernel into popcorn. That's not the case with the above video, but is for, say, Howie Beck's cover of Reptilia:

Started in on the current season of The Vampire Diaries. This was in ep 1. I'm now 6 minutes into ep. 2 and they have The Lonely Forest going in the background. Whoever's responsible for the music in this show continues to impress me.
